What Is My Day Master? The 10 BaZi Day Masters

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day pillar — the single character that represents your core self in BaZi. It is one of ten: the Yang or Yin form of each of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Every other element in your chart is read in relation to your Day Master, which is why finding it is the first step in any BaZi reading.

What a Day Master is

In a BaZi chart, each of the four pillars carries a Heavenly Stem on top. The Heavenly Stem of the Day pillar is your Day Master — the reference point for the entire reading. It sets your core temperament and defines how every other element in the chart is interpreted: as support, output, wealth, authority, or competition relative to you.

The ten Day Masters

Strong vs weak Day Masters

A strong Day Master has ample support in the chart from elements of the same type and from the element that produces it. A weak Day Master lacks that support and needs it. Neither is “better” — they are simply two starting conditions that call for different favorable elements. A strong Day Master usually benefits from elements that channel or restrain it; a weak one benefits from elements that feed and reinforce it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my Day Master?

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day pillar — the top character of the Day column in your BaZi chart. Qysmet computes it free from your birth date, time, and place.

Is a strong Day Master better than a weak one?

No. Neither is better — a strong Day Master and a weak Day Master simply need different favorable elements. A strong Day Master usually wants elements that channel or challenge it; a weak one wants elements that support and produce it.

What does my Day Master say about me?

It describes your core temperament — one of ten archetypes — and, just as importantly, it is the lens through which the whole chart is read. Every other element is interpreted in relation to your Day Master.

Can two people share a Day Master?

Yes. There are only ten Day Masters, so millions of people share each one. The rest of the chart — the other pillars, the Five Elements balance, and the luck pillars — is what differentiates them.

Does the Day Master change?

No. Your Day Master is fixed by your birth day and never changes. What changes over time is how favorable and unfavorable elements flow through your luck pillars around that fixed core.
