The Four Pillars of Destiny — Year, Month, Day, Hour
The Four Pillars of Destiny are the four columns of a BaZi chart — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each built from a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Together they hold the eight characters that a BaZi reading interprets. The Year pillar describes your ancestral and social self; the Month pillar your career and formative environment; the Day pillar your core self (the Day Master); the Hour pillar your inner world and later life.
The four columns
A BaZi chart is laid out as four vertical columns, read left to right: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each column — each pillar — pairs a Heavenly Stem on top with an Earthly Branch below, and each addresses a different sphere of life and a different life stage. Reading them together is what turns a birth moment into a full picture of temperament and timing.

Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
Every pillar is made of two parts. The upper character is a Heavenly Stem — one of ten, each an element in a Yang or Yin polarity. The lower character is an Earthly Branch — one of twelve, tied to the zodiac animals, and each carrying one or more hidden stems beneath it. Pairing the ten stems with the twelve branches yields the sixty combinations of the 60-jiazi cycle.

Which pillar matters most
The Day pillar. Its Heavenly Stem is your Day Master — the single character that represents your core self. Because every element elsewhere in the chart is interpreted relative to your Day Master, the Day pillar is the reference point for the entire reading. The Day pillar’s branch is also your marriage or partner palace.
How the pillars combine
Each stem–branch pairing is drawn from the sixty combinations of the 60-jiazi cycle, and the four pillars together give the eight characters a reading interprets. Which pillar is most important?
The Day pillar — it holds the Day Master, the Heavenly Stem that represents your core self. Every other element in the chart is read in relation to your Day Master, which makes the Day pillar the anchor of the whole reading.
What if I don't know my birth hour?
You still get your Year, Month, and Day pillars — including your Day Master — so a meaningful reading is possible. The Hour pillar simply is not set, so details about your inner world, children, and later life are less precise.
What is a Heavenly Stem?
A Heavenly Stem is one of ten characters, each carrying one of the Five Elements in either its Yang or Yin polarity. Every pillar has a Heavenly Stem on top, and the Day pillar’s stem is your Day Master.
What is an Earthly Branch?
An Earthly Branch is one of twelve characters, tied to the twelve zodiac animals. Each branch also holds one or more hidden stems, adding extra elemental detail beneath the surface of the pillar.
How many combinations are there?
